Words to lose and words to keep
Would give away Update and Paradigm, Premier, Tights
And Vomit, Alarm Clock, Controlling and Meat
Identify, Spider, Pollution and Road
And I would keep zephyr, sirocco, and breeze
And bacteria zebra and daisy and sneeze
And platypus, neighbour and starlings and trees
And Umpteen and Utterly, Outwith and Bees
The Lightbulb
We couldn’t live without it now
This copper wiring
But we were lit by light of angels
And burning camel dung
Great Mongol empires where the Khans
Crossed Asia on their shaggy beasts
The face of Ife, calm serene
Or tracking under stars in Southern drylands
On rocky deserts - over plains
But now we find ourselves
Tied to the mains
Penguins in Kansas
This is not a penguin paradise - no way
are we anything but lost among these walls
though that shiny floor is imitating ice
and yet - there’s no horizon
and no sky - what are we doing here ?
We were not made to live in Kansas
though they feed us well enough , these drying winds
that burning sun. No smell
of ocean - and no salty spray
But things are on the move
just recently
we’ve seen
our babies flap their flipper wings
and working on a plan to say Goodbye
not waving but flying
